Dental Implants

Stag Dental Care - dental implants in Rotherham, South YorkshireDental implants enable the patient to replace missing teeth without impacting on patients remaining teeth. They offer a long lasting solution to the problem of missing teeth and can even be used to secure loose dentures.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant consist of a titanium screw which is accurately placed in the upper or lower jaw it can then be used to support one or more replacement teeth. Titanium has become the material of choice because it has been found to form a strong bond with the bone of the jaw.

What does the treatment involve?

As with all treatments the patient will first sit down with the dentist to discuss what they wish to achieve. The dentist will then look to the suitability of dental implants for the particular patient as well as addressing any other relevant treatment options.

Dental implants are usually completed in two phases:-

Phase 1

This involves the placement of the titanium post into the jaw of the patient. This procedure is a highly skilled task as the placement will determine the position of the tooth. The patient will require local anaesthetic or oral sedation during this procedure.

This will then be left to rest for three to six months in order that the post can from a strong bond with the bone of the jaw to be able to support the replacement tooth. Your dentist will advise on temporary bridges or dentures that may be used in order to improve the appearance and functionality of your teeth whilst the post bonds into place.

Phase 2

This will involve the making and fitting of the replacement tooth or teeth to fit on the titanium post and blend in with your existing teeth. The replacement teeth will be made by the laboratory after the dentist has taken impressions and considered the correct shade.
